So, while many smart machines do not
incorporate AI technology, there is little in
a modern manufacturing facility that can be
classed as ‘dumb’ machinery.
DESIGNING WITH AUTOMATION
IN MIND
By now, the benefits of automation are
a given for most manufacturers. The
real question is, how do they automate
effectively and efficiently?
For those manufacturers reaching a high
level of automation maturity, or with niche
and complex products going through the
factory floor, commissioning a bespoke
automation system often offers the most
effective solution. Off-the-shelf installations
may be faster to procure and install, but
bespoke applications which are purpose
designed will give better longevity and
return on investment.
Manufacturers must avoid automating
for automation’s sake. If their automation
approach is closely aligned with the
business strategy and the commissioning
process has a laser-sharp focus on solving
a production problem, then they will
achieve a clear result.
