MEASUREMENT & MONITORING SAFE WATER TEMPERATURES – TM ELECTRONICS AND GUERNSEY HOSPITALS Like many other health Trusts and local authorities, States of Guernsey hospitals have adopted a new low cost water temperature monitoring system for the prevention of Legionella. The TC Wall Port System – designed by thermometer manufacturer, TM Electronics (TME) - has been installed on a number of the wards at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital to monitor subordinate loops, situated behind panels which previously would have to be removed every time a temperature was taken. “We’ve been very impressed with the Wall Port System,” says Clive Martin, Head of Estates “which we use with TME’s legionella thermometer kits and dual purpose surface/immersion probes to monitor water temperatures across the estate.” TC Wall Ports are miniature, wall-mounted thermocouple sockets which speed up and simplify temperature testing of hard to reach water assets like concealed pipework, thermostatic mixing valves, subordinate loops and high-level water storage tanks. Each port measures just 52 x 52 mm and houses either a single or double thermocouple connector, which is then linked to a water outlet using a fine wired fixed surface, air or immersion sensor. Temperatures are taken by simply plugging a hand-held thermometer into the port, delivering instant results with no loss of accuracy from up to 20 metres away. Paperless Recording TC Wall Ports are also ideal for enabling a paperless method of temperature recording. This is easily achieved by applying a label with a unique configurable barcode to each port. Temperature readings are recorded using TME’s MM7000-2D Barcode Scanning Thermometer. This portable, Bluetooth thermometer has a fast built-in barcode scanner, is battery powered and operates without Wi-Fi. Up to 1,000 readings can be stored at a time, with results downloaded using Bluetooth or USB connection. Software included with the thermometer ‘translates’ the barcodes into readable data and transfers it into a CSV file. Data can then be easily accessed and stored on either stand-alone or Cloud- based systems. APPLICATION/ TASK: During quality control on wallpaper coating machines for glass-textile wallpaper, it is necessary to control the straight- ness of the wefts at an average of once per hour. The frequency should be adjusted using a potentiometer as the machine speed can vary between 12-40m/min. The web width which has to be illuminated is two meters. SOLUTION/ RESULT: The decision was made to use the stationary stroboscope RT STROBE 12000 LED (A6-12210). At a distance of 60cm, the whole web width of two meters can be inspected. 102 PECM Issue 41 Offset weft threads are checked online using the stroboscope at a speed up to 40m/min. In the past, to inspect this offset, the machine speed had to be reduced which led to a loss of production. It is now possible to carry out the inspection at full speed.
