MACHINING
RAISING THE STAKES
PAILTON ENGINEERING
PAILTON INVEST IN NEW STAKING RIG
Steering system manufacturer, Pailton
Engineering, has invested in a purpose-built
staking rig from machine builder, BalTec. The
equipment is used for assembling steering
universal joints and will improve throughput
and deliver an improved degree of
consistency throughout Pailton Engineering’s
manufacturing process.
BalTec was chosen to complete this build for
Pailton Engineering because of its expertise in
joining technology machinery. The company
manufactures many different solutions,
including riveting machines, press systems
and screw driving systems. For Pailton
Engineering, a system was needed for the
assembly of steering universal joints, just
one of the many bespoke steering parts the
company manufactures.
In steering system assembly, the universal
joint, or simply ‘UJ’, is a connector between
108
PECM Issue 36
parts within the system. To accommodate
rotation, tilt and telescope functions within
the system, the universal joint must be able to
rotate at an angle.
Effective bearing placement within the
assembly enables smooth rotation over
the lifespan of the steering system. This is
particularly pertinent where different drivers
are adjusting the steering tilt and telescope
functions daily, for improved driving position,
comfort and safety.
This piece of equipment enables installation
of the bearing before staking the yoke
forging. It’s vital that this is carried out
accurately, to enable products to be
manufactured to high levels of consistency —
this is important for all Pailton’s customers.
The arrival of this equipment which has
been installed in its own purpose-built work
area that is solely focused on universal
joint assembly, is an important addition
for Pailton. The equipment is performing
well, and the investment is making bearing
installation and UJ assembly an easier and
more consistent process.
Investment is a core part of Pailton
Engineering’s business transformation. In
fact, over £700k has been reinvested in the
company each year, for the past two years.
