AUTOMOTIVE MACHINED COMPONENTS BG ENGINEERING BG ENGINEERING LENDS ITS SUPPORT TO SHU RACING TEAM! BG Engineering, a subcontractor for precision machined components based in Chesterfield, has demonstrated its support for the young engineers of the future by sponsoring the SHU (Sheffield Hallam University) Formula Student Racing Team. This is the fifth consecutive year that Sheffield Hallam University has been involved in Formula Student, a competition run by IMechE (Institute of Mechanical Engineers) which culminates at Silverstone in July, in conjunction with Formula One. Formula Student (FS), an educational engineering competition backed by industry and high-profile engineers, with aims to develop enterprising and innovative engineers and encourage more young individuals to take up a career in engineering. The Shu Racing Team from Sheffield Hallam University approached Marie Cooper from BG Engineering, after being recommended by another regional engineering firm, because of its machining expertise. BG Engineering manufactured engine mounts and a steering column for their race car, which has been designed and developed by nine undergraduates, 7 of which are MEng Engineering students who design the components who oversee the manufacture and build of the car with a further two second year student managers. Max Vollans – Principle of the SHU Racing Team, said: “We’re really grateful for all the support we’ve received from BG Engineering. This project tests not only our design and mechanical engineering skills, but also our commercial knowledge and understanding too, making it directly relevant to the world of motorsport engineering. It is only with the support of companies like BG Engineering that this has been possible.” A number of the eight undergraduates have already secured careers in motorsport or aerospace engineering once they graduate. Shane Greveson, Business Development Director at BG Engineering, said: “The Formula Student challenge gives students an invaluable insight into the real world of engineering. 70 PECM Issue 34 We are proud to be a sponsor and wish them every success, not only in this competition, but in their future careers.” The event is designed to provide an ideal opportunity for the students to test, demonstrate and improve their capabilities to deliver a complex and integrated product in the demanding environment of a motorsport competition. The project usually forms part of a degree-level project and is viewed by the motorsport industry as the standard for engineering graduates to meet, as they move from the university to the workplace. From its beginnings in 1988, BG Engineering has become one of the region’s leading CNC machining companies, with more than 30 staff including four apprentices and 18 CNC machines, boasting customers located across the UK and Europe. The company has recently expanded by acquiring Sheffield- based Pentag, a business specialising in bespoke gear cutting projects and will relocate its staff to BG’s extensive Chesterfield facility. Over the past 30 years, the company has elevated itself into one of the leading precision engineers in the region. Through strategic and customer driven investment BG Engineering has built relationships with some of the largest global OEMs in the energy industry. BG Engineering prides itself on its approach to quality and inspection. The company is ISO 9001 accredited and is focused on continual improvement by having its own in-house inspection department to ensure that all parts reach the customer ‘right first time.’ BG Engineering is also currently working towards securing AS9100 accreditation to become an approved aerospace supplier.
