LINDOFLAMM® - innovative
metal heating solution from BOC
T
he processes of pre- and postweld metal heat treatment are
well known by the steelwork
industry. They are mainly used
to reduce the risks of hydrogen cracking,
releasing the tensions accumulated in the
structure during the welding process and
reducing the distortion of the final product
These processes are traditionally labour and
time consuming which in turn translates
into increased costs and put additional
pressure on the prices, margins and overall
productivity.
BOC has recently successfully launched the
patented LINDOFLAMM® acetylene burner
technology to the UK market. This new and
innovative technology helps the steelwork
companies to significantly reduce the time
and cost of the heat treatment, improving t he
uality of the final structure
BOC has installed the new LINDOFLAMM®
installation for one of their customers who
repairs EN24 steel components for other
companies. The repair process requires the
elements to be pre-heated up to 250°C prior
to any welding. For many years they used
propane aspirated air burner designed inhouse, which required on average 3 hours to
reach the desired temperature.
Understanding the complexity of the
customer operations, the BOC account
manager suggested that BOC LINDOFLAMM®
technology might help the customer to
significantly reduce the time and save them
on costs, and improve the overall production
capabilities.
In trials, the new LINDOFLAMM® installation
achieved a time reduction of 75% - down to
45mins from 3h previously. These results also
translated into significant cost reduction
estimated benefit of acetylene air application
versus oxy-propane was 50%.
dditionally, the efficiency of acetylene
preheating significantly reduced the
number of cylinders required in stock. As
the acetylene is supplied in manifolded
cylinder package the safety risks related to
the manual handling of cylinders have been
eliminated. Following the successful trials,
the company have decided to adopt the new
technology and install LINDOFLAMM® burners
permanently to replace the old propane
based process.
he customer is no benefiting from
increased throughput and improved
productivity resulting in the ability to offer
their customers more attractive turnaround.
Jaroslaw Solinski, the Manufacturing Sector
Manager from BOC said: We are happy to be
able to offer our customer the LINDOFLAMM®
burners and see the benefits they deliver.
BOC is the market leading industrial gas
supplier and with our in-depth understanding
of steelwork processes, we can provide our
customers with innovative gas solutions
that help them to be more successful in the
market.
Solinski also added, that he believes the
LINDOFLAMM® technology does have a
significant role to play not only in structural
steel industry but also energy, ship building,
pressure vessel manufacturing and other
sectors working with thick metal elements
- We do see the growing demand for
LINDOFLAMM® from our customers both for
large scale automated installations as well
as small scale manual hand held burners.
This proves that our new technology
addresses some of the key challenges the
manufacturers are faced with, regardless of
the scale of operation.
