Training & Recruitment
Dr Justin
Steele-Davies,
Academic Lead
in Engineering
at UDOL
The recent news of the Palmyra Arch replica highlighted additive manufacturing,
or 3D printing, as a tool to replicate just about anything including historic
artefacts. However, these reports were a bit of a misnomer and you may, like
me, have been surprised to see a subtractive CNC milling machine at work in
this case!
It is clear the term ‘3D printing’ has captured the popular imagination
encompassing the notion of a digital model quickly being manufactured to
order. The twist being that it feels like photocopying a real world object, another
reason why printing is latched on to due to the link with photocopying.
What’s really interesting is that like many other fields before it, the
manufacturing industry’s move to digital opens up access to the majority
rather than the minority. A prime example is the music industry, where music
recording and sequen cing can be done with a laptop rather than expensive
instruments, or publishing which can now remain entirely in the digital domain
with an exceptionally low cost of entry.
Now a whole range of services allow individuals and companies alike to order
items that would have required significant planning and cost in the past. Those
with the knowledge and skills in digital manufacture will be able to design and
build with limited intervention from anyone else (just like in music and publication
now), significantly reducing the cost of some custom solutions. These skills will
become increasingly important in the future for the manufacturing industry in
all shapes and sizes. It’s an exciting time to get involved and anyone can gain
the specialist skills in this area with access to computing resource and time.
The University of Derby Online Learning (UDOL) is proud to introduce our new
MSc in Advanced Materials and Additive Manufacturing, teaching innovative
skills essential for success in this advanced industry. This cutting-edge Masters
degree can be studied part-time and entirely online allowing you to implement
your learning in your own real-world work environment.

Safety in
Numbers
Excel is a fabulously versatile
tool, but it is not easy to
make it clear to users how
your spreadsheet reaches its
results.
Do you know how the results
you use have been derived?
One of the benefits of
developing strong spreadsheet skills is that you can lift the lid on the
methods employed. Learn a bit of Visual Basic, and even macros need not
stand in your way.
Nicholson Solutions is a Learning and Performance Institute accredited
learning provider, with a track record of developing spreadsheet solutions
and analysing existing ones.
