On January 14 , 2019 , NBCUniversal unveiled its ambitious plan to launch an over-the-top streaming service in 2020 . This innovative service was designed to offer a rich array of both original and existing content , catering to a broad audience . It is accessible in two distinct versions : a free tier supported by advertising and a premium ad-free subscription model . The leadership of this endeavor was entrusted to the capable hands of chairman Bonnie Hammer , overseeing the operation within the division known as NBCUniversal Direct-to- Consumer and Digital Enterprises .
Fast forward to September 17 , 2019 , and the service finally received its official name : “ Peacock ,” a clever nod to the iconic NBC logo . With this announcement came a slew of exciting details about its initial lineup of original programming . This impressive slate included the likes of the science-fiction series “ Brave New World ” ( which had been relocated from the USA Network ), the limited series “ Angelyne ,” the gripping crime drama “ Dr . Death ,” the comedic gem “ Rutherford Falls ,” the engaging teen drama “ One Of Us Is Lying ,” the talk show “ The Amber Ruffin Show ,” and revivals of beloved classics like “ Battlestar Galactica ,” “ Punky Brewster ,” and “ Saved by the Bell .” Additionally , Peacock secured exclusive streaming rights for two beloved NBC sitcoms : “ The Office ” in October 2020 and “ Parks and Recreation ” in January 2021 .
