The 5-R Framework and
the Elimination Diet
First “R” = Remove the offending agents
Remove the most common culprits like processed food (high-fructose corn
syrup), refined sugar, gluten, soy, dairy and eggs. Some diets also include
corn, shellfish, beef, pork and oranges.
Eliminate all processed foods and all chemical additives including artificial
colors and flavors and preservatives.
Limit or preferably avoid alcohol and NSAIDs during the 3–6 weeks.
Eat whole foods during the diet. When possible stick to organic and non-GMO
foods and meats free of hormones.
Second “R” = Replace digestive enzymes
When the gut is damaged and “leaky,” important enzymes may be lacking.
Replacing these enzymes will help to break down and digest food while
waiting for the intestinal lining to repair. Typically once the inflammation is
gone, the enzyme functioning returns.
