GARDENS Winter Brights WRITTEN BY Delia McMullen I In your mind’s eye, is a garden in winter dormant and dull? Do you see only a black, white and gray palette bereft of any pops of color? If so, let’s brighten up that dreary mental picture. Winter gardens can be beautiful and unique places that dazzle with structure and form. Imagine the stark contrast of a snow-covered garden path winding through an area of unexpected color. Picture a tableau of massive hedges clipped in geometric patterns set against the winter sky. Envision an allée of elegantly bare linden trees along your driveway. Consider a hidden, hedged garden “room” with surprising brightness and fragrance. JANUARY / FEBRUARY 2014 39
