In the late 1990s , however , Wool produced what are possibly his most successful paintings . He still used a spray gun , but he loosened his line , and the results were lovely paintings with lyrical looping lines that tangled together . He then began to use turpentine soaked rags and brushes to wipe away parts of the line , creating lashes in variable shades of grey that interrupted the lyricism of the pieces but gave them more gravitas . Some have noted that these work harken back to Abstract Expressionism , albeit without the ego and the angst — certainly an interesting coda to your art-filled day , and something to ponder as you wind your way down Wright ’ s sublime rotunda .
Now you ’ re done ! If , however , you still have an ounce of energy , cross 5th Avenue , walk into Central Park . Proceed north along the jogging path of the reservoir until you reach the north end . Then look south and treat yourself to another splendid piece of art , a stellar view of the midtown skyline popping up over the trees of Central Park . Champagne anyone ? n
