Spring Sphincter Society Update

By Chloe McGrath - LMSS President
Hi everyone , I hope you are all settling into the new term well . Post-Christmas blues and the dark nights of January and February can always be tough . There is pressure to be productive and make positive changes in the new year , but this is a friendly reminder that it is okay to stay the same ! I hope you ’ ve enjoyed yourselves and managed to spend time with friends and family . Warmer and sunnier evenings are on the way ! January is often a busy month here at the LMSS , with Welcome Back Party 2 , Annual Ball , and Ordinary Meetings . Unfortunately , our WBP was cancelled due to safety reasons and the concerning rise in COVID-19 cases . However , this allowed for Annual Ball to go ahead , and it was great to see so many people glammed up for a fantastic night at the Adelphi ( and perhaps some questionable food ). The return of Annual Ball hopefully lived up to expectations and provided a great platform to celebrate the year we ’ ve had so far amongst friends . New to Annual Ball in recent years is the LMSS Achievement Award , which recognises students ’ outstanding contribution to the medical school and wider community .
52 Cities Challenge This year ’ s winner of the LMSS Achievement Award was 4th Year , Alice Fortune , who is running a Marathon in every city in England for YoungMinds ! This is a brilliant charity providing mental health support for young people around the UK . Alice has already raised an incredible £ 1,830 for the charity with 10 / 52 cities already completed . Please show her your support by donating to her JustGiving page : justgiving . com / fundraising / running52cities . Track her progress on Insta and twitter : @ running52cities We ’ re so proud of you Alice , keep up the great work !
Ordinary Meeting Update Our next Ordinary Meeting has been rescheduled for Thursday 24th February @ The Jack Leggett Lecture Theatre on campus . We will be joined by the incredible Professor Calum Semple OBE . Prof Semple is a professor of child health and outbreak medicine at the UoL and a respiratory consultant at Alder Hey . He is a senior government clinical Advisor on the SAGE committee and has been heavily involved in the COVID-19 response , and Ebola outbreak in West Africa . It is set to be an interesting talk , so join us for the evening which will be followed by a social ! Check out the Facebook event for more details .
