Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows stated that the new number will offer real benefits for the public, remove confusion and make it simpler for the public to contact the police. “I would urge everyone to use the new 101 number for non emergency calls which will help free up the 999 system for real emergencies such as reporting crimes in progress or advising police of individuals in immediate danger. This will ensure that the police can deal with real emergencies in a more timely and effective manner.”
Speaking on the new service Alderman Drew Thompson, Chairperson of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership said.
“The introduction of the new number will make it much easier for the public to contact the police and ensure that resources are targeted and prioritised for emergency situations. The ongoing awareness campaign will help the public to understand when to use the non-emergency 101 number and when to call 999. I am hopeful that this initiative will further improve the service provided by the police.”
