Starting on October 8th and 9th, Jupiter, Mars, Venus, and a crescent Moon will be lined up within about 15 degrees of each other. The group rises around 4am and will be visible until the Sun washes them out. Over the next week, the Moon will move away to the East and Jupiter, Mars, and Venus will become closer and closer. On the 17th and 18th, the trio will be in a cluster with Mars and Jupiter less than one half degree apart. One half degree is less than the width of your pinky held out in front of you. Venus will approach Mars and Jupiter as the days progress. On the 25th, Venus will be next to Jupiter. On the 28rd, the trio will be at their closest combined grouping. On November 2nd, Venus will be next to Mars. Throughout November, the trio will spread apart again. 25 Grains of Sugar – Imagine if you took the Earth away and replaced it with 25 grains of sugar. Then imagine another 25 grains of sugar next door to the Earth and again as far out as the known universe. If the mass in the universe was spread out evenly, that’s what you would see. That is how low the density is – 25 grains of sugar spread out in a volume of space as large as the Earth. Luckily for us, matter is clustered in small pockets throughout the universe. To put life, the universe, and everything in perspective, searches for “Powers of 10” at www.YouTube.com. This movie was created by Charles and Ray Eames for IBM. I first saw the movie at an IMAX in Washington DC and was amazed.
