Vision and Aging
Beginning at around age 40, you may
begin to see changes in your vision,
especially when doing close work.
Presbyopia, a normal change in the
eye’s focusing ability, is easily corrected
with multifocal lenses. You may also
experience other age-related vision
changes such as the need for more light,
difficulty reading or doing close work,
sensitivity to glare, changes in color
perception and reduced tear production.
Some of the above conditions, like glaucoma, have virtually
no symptoms until permanent damage is already done, and
can be detected only during a thorough
eye exam. There are many other eye
conditions that are checked for during a
thorough eye exam as well.
To help keep your eyes healthy, make
sure you have them checked yearly.
Early diagnosis and treatment can
increase your chances for good eyesight
well into your golden years!

As you enter your 60s, your chances of developing more
serious sight-threatening conditions increase. Common eye
health and vision problems among older adults are:
MACULAR DEGENERATION: Macular degeneration,
the leading cause of central vision loss among older adults
occurs because of changes to the macula, the most sensitive
part of the retina.
CATARACT: A cataract is an opaque film on the eye’s lens
that usually forms over a long period of time, although in some
instances it can progress rapidly. As a cataract progresses, it
causes blurred vision, glare, dimming of colors.
GLAUCOMA: Glaucoma results from increased fluid
pressure inside the eye that damages the optic nerve. If
untreated, glaucoma leads to loss of peripheral vision and
eventual blindness.
