Fall is here and the holidays are
fast approaching. Time once again
to think about gifts for family and friends. Whether
you shop early or at the last minute, I encourage you to
shop local and to shop handmade.
There are an amazing number of artists and crafters
in our area. They create an astounding array of items
including original paintings, jewelry, woodwork,
clothing and home décor. Each of these items is
lovingly made by hand and often one-of-a-kind. Prices
range from ʻoh so affordableʼ to ʻskyʼs the limitʼ.
Youʼll find these handcrafted works in galleries and
artistsʼ cooperatives as well as at arts and crafts shows
throughout the area. The Fourth Friday Art Walk in
Prescott gives you the opportunity to visit galleries
and co-ops, meet artists and learn about their work.
Arts and crafts shows are great places to connect
with artists. Youʼre sure to find just the right gift for
someone special on your list or even for yourself.
I do a lot of my holiday
shopping at arts and crafts
shows as well as galleries. I
try to learn a little about the
artist and how they created
the item I selected. I then pass along that information
by including a little note with the gift. That personal
touch makes even a small gift special.
Another thing I do as I buy each item is note who itʼs
for and place it in a special holiday box. Then when
itʼs time to start wrapping I know just where all the
gifts are. Before I started this system, some gifts were
hidden so well I didnʼt find them till long after the
holidays!
This year look locally for unique and interesting items
for those on your list and yourself. Youʼll contribute to
a happy holiday for the artists and keep the money in
our community. Make handcrafted gifts a part of your
holiday tradition.
