PCC News Monthly May 2016 | Page 20

80-10-10 I’m going to be trying a new diet this month. The reason I am doing this is because my blood sugar levels have been elevated (ie diabetes) for some time now. I exercise regularly, have good muscle tone, and have hardly any body fat. I am 61 years old. I refuse to go on any kind of drugs and have been determined to figure this out with a natural solution. I have tried various diets over the years without much success. I was able to drastically lower my blood sugar levels when I did a juice fast but that is not something that can be sustained. My latest research has brought me to a diet called 80/10/10. That stands for 80% Carbohydrates/10% Fat/10% Protein. To get best results the diet is a raw food diet with no animal products, no processed foods, no oils, and no GMO products. Basically it is eating only fruits, vegetables, and a few nuts/seeds. The good part is I can pretty much eat all I want of this stuff. It’s just a mater of figuring out different recipes and variety of fruits and vegetables to eat. The big part of the 80% is fresh fruits. This is the part that is very different for me. As a diabetic, I had the opinion that I should stay away from high sugar content fruit. So I hardly eat any of this kind of food. Bananas, Melons, Mangos, etc are a sample of the fruits I can eat. What proponents of this diet are saying is that it is the high natural sugar content of these fruits that my body is actually craving and wanting, not the fats and proteins 20 May 2016 pccnews from animal products, oils, excessive nuts, etc. It is the high fats, protein, and GMO products that are interfering with the insulin receptors in my body causing insulin resistance. Many diabetics have claimed this diet has returned their blood sugar to normal. Well I think I’m the perfect test for this, So...when I get back from my vacation which starts next week...I’m going to give it a try. They say I should start seeing some results within two weeks though it may take a few months to get things to settle in around normal. We will see. I’ll keep you posted of my results in a future article. If anyone has a history of this diet, please drop me an email and let me know how it went/is going. —Gordon Barth is the owner of Island Fitness Center located at 3155 N.
