PART 2
COMPLEX ANSWERS
I
f nothing else, yours and my answers to these
questions should at least be a genuine thoughtprovoking workout! I even added the adjective
Larry Wonderling “convoluted” to this title. It suggests that there
are probably no right or wrong answers, just
personal opinions!
So, here goes my “answers.”
1. President Dwight Eisenhower certainly gets my vote when
he made such open comments to our nation as “Beware the
industrial/military complex.” “I hate war as only a soldier who
has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility,
its stupidity.” “Every gun that’s made, every war ship launched,
every rocket fired signifies in the final sense a theft from those
who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not
clothed.”
2. I thought our Mexican borders were “secured.” Then it
dawned on me that it depends on how one defines the term secure.
I just don’t agree with those leaders who continue to preach “All
or Nothing” type decisions to multifaceted issues. To some,
securing our borders would include building a “Berlin type” wall
between all Mexican borders with armed guards at close intervals.
Personally, I’ve been quite satisfied with our reasonably secure
border crossings since my first crossing years ago.
all I’ve learned and a renewed desire to keep learning with more
tears and laughter.
4.Although I’m not thoroughly acquainted with all forms of
government, I believe they’re all flawed in some way. Empirically,
history seems to have consistently confirmed that the “people” who
run the government, not the type of government, define its success!
5. When an apparent derelict, very shabby looking old man
sitting with his dog struggled to his feet, wrapped his arms around
me and sobbed when I gave him $10!
6. The unimagined prosperity of our nation in a few hundred
years was unequivocally created by all sorts of immigrants like my
illegal dad and grandpa.
7. For me, my neighborhood.
8. No! Having lived in central Asia, including Afghanistan, for
over 2 years, sectarian tribal leaders, Sunnis vs. Shiites, racial
hierarchies, etc. clearly reminded me that Afghans aren’t interested
in our political interference. Occupying their country for two
months or twenty years wouldn’t matter. Sadly, many of my good
Muslim friends were later killed during our high altitude bombings
of their country.
9. There are plenty, however, I rank alcoholic beverages the
worst, with smoking over a pack a day, and overeating resulting in
obesity close seconds!
10. Rather than disagree, categorically blaming others as
wrong, tends to preclude any compromise while triggering further
conflicts—including eventual wars.

3. In my chronological age of 86, I continue to have a
psychosocial age of 45; which offers me astonishing gratitude for
