A Taste of Wine
Red, White, and Wine!
Whatʼs the best wine to
celebrate Independence
Day? While beer is often
the refreshing beverage
of choice on the 4th of
July, wine is increasingly more
popular as a relaxing, summertime refreshment. Weʼll
be grilling up shrimp on the 4th and while grilled
shrimp pairs well with all types of whites and rosés, by
pairing the wine with the accompanying sauce, you can
really make a great match.
Sauvignon Blanc with Herby Flavors - Zesty
Sauvignon Blanc has those slight green flavors that are
terrific with herbs in sauces like salsa verde and pesto.
These whites are also light enough to pair with shrimp
in simple vinaigrettes or green salads.
Whites with Spicy or Tropical Flavors - If shrimp are
served with a spicy Asian-style dipping sauce, a slightly
sweet Riesling is your best choice. The Riesling can
also be great with fruit salsas, like mango. You can also
try semi-dry versions of Chenin Blanc which are richly
textured whites that often have
luscious fruit flavors.
Rosé with Roasty, Savory
or Pungent Flavors - Lighter
French-style rosés are a great
catch-all wine for simple
grilled shrimp preparations. You almost canʼt go
wrong. Theyʼre also terrific with rich sauces, like
aioli or compound butters. If your shrimp are baconwrapped or served with a rich, roasty sauce like
Spanish romesco, a slightly fuller bodied, fruity rosé is
just the thing.
Happy tasting!
