Turquoise naturally occurs in colors ranging from sky blue to
green-gray. Its color depends on the metals in the ground where
it is mined. Copper produces the blue in turquoise and iron or
chromium produces the green. Most turquoise contains veins
of rust, dark brown or black known as matrix. The most prized
turquoise is matrix-free and of a clear, robin’s egg blue.
The American Southwest is one of the largest producers of
turquoise. In Arizona, the Kingman Mine and the Sleeping
Beauty Mine have produced some of the most beautiful and
valuable turquoise. While the Kingman Mine is still producing,
the Sleeping Beauty Mine stopped production in 2012 making
its turquoise even more expensive and sought after.
