lfred Hitchcock’s 1958 thriller “Vertigo” simulated the
spinning sensation of vertigo with camera techniques.
However, people with vertigo would no doubt say that the
feeling the actual condition produces can’t be duplicated.
“Imagine that the world starts spinning and you’re trying to
stay on your feet,” said Aaron DeBord, PT, DPT, Supervisor,
Physical Rehabilitation Services at Yavapai Regional
Medical Center (YRMC). “It’s frightening for people.”
Along with loss of balance, people with vertigo may also
experience nausea and vomiting. Routine activities – getting
out of bed, looking up at a high shelf, bending to pick up a
box, or leaning back into a beauty salon sink – can trigger
vertigo. Fortunately, vertigo episodes don’t last too long.
What causes vertigo? Head trauma, an inner ear infection
or Meniere’s disease – which creates an excessive buildup
of fluid in the inner ear – all may lead to vertigo. The most
common cause of vertigo is Benign Paroxysmal Positional
Vertigo (BPPV).
