Expanding Gender equality?
Historically, male gender domi-
nance, including sexuality, has re-
mained obvious throughout the world.
Our recorded history of male domi-
nance has also shown their robust
physical strength, sexual readiness,
aggressive stamina, and psychosocial
mastery. Through centuries this fe-

male acceptance of male dominance
has included women being a loyal child-bearing sex partner,
and domestic chattel! Then once our country became a con-
stitutional nation it took another 145 years before our females
achieved a semblance of legal emancipation through their
own courageous tenacity to finally obtain voter’s rights.
Hopefully the above introduction underscores the politi-
cal and religious male leadership of our planet throughout
recorded human history, which until recently, anointed men
with dominant and women with recessive sexual roles. Then,
less than a year ago, it has become legal in many states for
same gender couples to marry; while more recently, women
are openly complaining about past sexual harassment by
males, both suggesting that females are continuing to close
the gender equality gap.
Here’s another more hopeful reminder of women’s gender
plight that ironically might be actually fading by the unin-
tended consequences of a few male flavored phrases. The
aging term “Man up,” originated in early rodeos, while the
more recently popularized “You guys,” of unknown origin,
was disgusting to me. In the past few years you’ve prob-
ably noticed the “you guys” popular phrase in mixed gender
groups as if females don’t count. This includes journalists
addressing radio and TV audiences as “you guys.”
Then I recently joined the two phrases into “Man up you
guys” with my own female equality interpretation. I’m hop-
ing my revised interpretation suggesting gender equality in
mixed gender groups will overshadow the usual inequality
hint by “you guys!”
These psychosocial changes in our nation may suggest
that females are actually closing the gender equality gap
with males. So is there a more tenable solution to many fe-
males’ recent public complaints regarding a male’s sexually
repugnant propositions, including fondling years ago? Well,
considering what appears to be a woman’s more notewor-
thy shrinking gender inequality in recent months, even their
male counterparts seem to recognize that females are losing
their psychosocially subservience to men.
In any event, as a clinical psychologist who has objected
for years to the awful gender inequality in our democracy,
it may be time for women to act like gender equals with a
more candid response to anyone’s unwanted sexual harass-
ment. I would strongly advise a female adamant “No…get
lost…not interested…or you disgust me, etc, along with a
casual exit. Such an abrupt scolding approach seems like a
long overdue reply to those males still stuck in their tradi-
tional psychosexually gender superiority belief!
A sincere Happy Valentines Day for “you guys” and a wise
use of your gender equality.
