A Taste of Wine
In classical mythology, Cupid
(Latin Cupídó, meaning “desire”)
is the god of desire, love, attraction,
and affection. He is often portrayed
as the son of the love goddess Ve-
nus and the war god Mars. He is also
known in Latin as Amor (“Love”).
As luck will have it, my husband
and I ran into him the other day when we were removing
our outside holiday decorations. We invited him into our
home to have a glass of wine and relax since he is so very
busy at this time of year. I asked Cupid what his favorite
wine is and he said “red”. We all laughed. We opened
a 2014 Rombauer Vineyards El Dorado Zinfandel since
it is one of our favorite red wines and one that always
seems to be able to enhance a romantic moment. It also
pairs perfectly with whatever might be served. Cupid set
his bow and arrow down for a moment. We made a toast
to Cupid’s aim and thanked him for hitting both of us to-
gether. He told us some stories about a few missed shots
and we all laughed some more. But then, Cupid stood
up quickly, drank the rest of his glass of wine in one big
gulp, and then said, “I make wine disappear. What’s your
super power?” We were so surprised and in a blink of an
eye, Cupid was gone. We smiled and hoped he would
have good aim for some of our friends, although all’s fair
in love and wine.
A few tasting notes about El Dorado Zinfandel..This
wine is ruby red with a bright hue with aromas of red
berries and blackberries mixed with brown sugar, tobac-
co, and a hint of rose. On the palate, it is expansive and
dense with flavors of plums, boysenberry, blackberry
jam, vanilla, and dried floral. The finish builds and lin-
gers on and on.
Happy tasting!
