PRO BONO SPOTLIGHT CORNER
LEGAL AID LUNCH AND LEARN
MELISSA DUNCAN
On September 11, 2019, the Fifteenth
Judicial Circuit’s Pro Bono Committee
hosted the Legal Aid Society of Palm
Beach County, Inc. (LASPBC), at a
Lunch and Learn for the Fifteenth
Judicial Circuit to present information
about its wide array of programs
and advocacy for underrepresented
individuals. Executive Director, Bob
Bertisch, along with eight supervising
attorneys from the agency spoke
about LASPBC’s 21 projects, regarding
representation in issues such as
housing, domestic violence, family
law, children’s rights, guardianship,
and pro bono. The event was attended
by 38 staff members from the Fifteenth
Judicial Circuit, including twelve
judges and ten judicial assistants.
The presentation highlighted the
breadth of work conducted by LASPBC
throughout various practice areas and
jurisdictions. The group discussed
the important role the court plays in
remaining aware of cases in which
Legal Aid should become involved.
The judicial community was updated
as to current challenges in funding
representation for all individuals,
and the ongoing effort by LASPBC to
recruit pro bono attorneys and secure
financial support from the legal
community.
Melissa Duncan is a supervising
attorney for the Legal Aid Society
