House Training 101
Today I would like to offer a few words on successful House Training . House training questions arise when bringing home that new puppy or rescue dog that has not been trained . Both situations require a fresh start . I recommend using a crate located in a quiet area . The crate should be just big enough to allow your dog to stand up and turn around . If your crate is too big you can use a divider to create a smaller space . The crate should be inviting and feel like a den . If you are not actively watching your dog , it should be in a crate . A dog generally will not defecate in their sleeping area .
Signs your dog needs to go may be sniffing or whining . The key to success is to not allow accidents to happen . Take your dog outside when it wakes up and again after meals . Between meal times , an older dog can go several hours without needing to go outside . The rule of thumb for puppies is no more than one hour longer than months of age . So your new puppy , perhaps 2 months old , will need to go out every 3 hours ... day and night . Put the puppy on a leash , even if you have a fence . Do not interact with your dog , except to offer a command such as “ Get busy ,” until the puppy has relieved himself . The minute he relieves himself , offer praise and a treat . Now it ' s time for play and exercise - to your dog , the biggest reward !
