Question : " My dog and I have been sneezing all week . Could we be suffering from the same allergies ??
Answer : Humans aren ' t the only ones that suffer with seasonal allergies . It ' s common for many dogs , too , once allergy season begins . Canine allergies are normally caused by the same triggers that occur in humans - our pet ' s immune system comes across an allergen or antigen it dislikes and then responds in the same manner our bodies do . These allergens include mold , mildew , pollen , and dust mites . There are several ways for us to treat allergies in dogs . Symptoms in canines usually present themselves in the form of allergic dermatitis , skin inflammation or irritation , and results in your dog ' s skin becoming extremely itchy . To relieve the itch , he will scratch himself excessively , chew parts of his body , and rub himself against the carpet , wall , or furniture . As the itching persists your dog ' s skin will become inflamed and sore , and may result in hair loss , hot spots , scabbing , and open sores . Other symptoms can include ear infection , respiratory symptoms like watery eyes , sneezing , and runny nose , and redness . For Relief : 1 ) Wash allergens on his coat by giving him frequent baths . Use a shampoo for sensitive skin . 2 ) Wash off allergens from his paws so they don ' t spread them all over the house . 3 ) Keep the places he spends most of his time vacuumed and keep bedding clean . 4 ) Allergies are an immune system response , so it ' s crucial to keep immune function at optimum levels . Use foods that are low in grain and fillers . Carbohydrates can trigger and worsen inflammation . 5 ) Keep air conditioner filters clean and change once a month . 6 ) Maintain a healthy diet . 7 ) Contact your Vet to recommend an antihistamine or provide the proper dosage of over-the counter-allergy medication for treatment .
