They spoke about furthering the educational campaign to eliminate trafficking of human beings,
working with the Roma minority both in rural and
urban settings to assist with job placement, life
skills for youth, as well as sharing agricultural information and access to micro-credit financing in the small
towns and villages.
Rachel Gilmore, a second year TEFL PCV from Ohio
gave an excellent speech about how important it is for
young people to focus their energy here in Bulgaria instead of leaving the country for higher paying jobs overseas. She reminded everyone in the audience that Bulgaria would be a very different place if their national
revolutionary heroes, Hristo Botev and Vasil Levski,
had opted out of helping to free Bulgaria from the five
hundred year old Turkish yoke. Quoting Levski, Rachel
said, “If I succeed, the whole nation succeeds, but if I
lose I lose only myself.” To answer those who ask her
why she does so much as a volunteer, she echoed John
Ruskin by stating, “The highest reward for a man’s toil
