I
’d like to share an activity that I’ve started at my site in the village of Injevo which is located 3 km from the town of Radovis. I
recently began a Pen Friend Exchange in conjunction with the World Wise Schools Program and my counterpart, Svetlana, for
our 4th grade class. In response to 21 letters we received from the states, 21 Macedonian students became involved and wrote back.
I must say, the Macedonian students were thrilled and excited to have received letters from students living in the United States. My
students could not wait to write back answering questions such as ‘who their favorite singer is’, ‘what their favorite color is’, ‘how
many siblings they’ve got’, and on and on.
The information shared coincided with lessons from their text books. From the letters sent, there was mutual excitement
from both the Macedonian and American students. Not only were my 4th grade students anxious to write, they ALL included
pictures of themselves to send to their Pen Friends in America. Their pride and confidence showed through their letter writing and
considering this was a first time experience for all of them, I’m amazed at the job they did. It’s funny how improving English skills
can actually be fun and enjoyable! I hope the exchange continues and will help foster knowledge from one culture to another, with
an added benefit of excitement for all of th H?[ ?[???B???]?? ? H
