I used to feel like I was living with my bags packed. I wasn’ t afraid of death. But now it’ s my greatest fear.
When I joined the Peace Corps, knowing I would be gone for two years, I dreaded the aching pain of losing someone I love back home. Now I find myself in Peace Corps, grieving the death of a beautiful woman I came to know during my service in Macedonia.
Tis the season for many emotions in Peace Corps Macedonia: from the accomplishments of volunteer projects and travels to the mixed emotions of a first( or last) few months of service, and from the joy of summer festivities to the poignant volunteer stories of love and loss. In this Summer 2013 issue,
Ray Christopher Father of PCV Sara Christopher, MAK 16 03 December 1949- 15 June 2013
“ They say that from the instant he lays eyes on her, a father adores his daughter. Whoever she grows up to be, she is always to him that little girl in pigtails...”
- Anonymous we pay tribute to Helene Wade, our dear MAK 15 who passed away this June. We also honor our fellow volunteers who have endured a loss back home during their service. These women have lost loved ones, yet have the strength to continue their service in the name of peace. They are strong, fabulous women who deserve to be recognized. Please join me in honoring them and the loved ones they’ ve lost. This issue is for them. This issue is for Helene.

“ My Aunt Rosie was the most giving, loving, forgiving, and whole- heartily generous, and hilarious person, I am so lucky to have been raised by her, and I can only hope to become as good a woman as she was. I miss her tremendously.”
