Osogovo Monastery Kriva Palanka 28 August

Every year on the 28th of August , thousands of people from all over the Balkans hike up to the Osogovo Monastery in Kriva Palanka . The monastery consists of two churches including the larger “ Saint Joachim of Osogovo ” ( 19th century ) and the smaller “ Holy Mother of God ” ( 12th century ). The monastery grounds also consist of a bell tower , dormitories , a guardhouse , and a residency for the Head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church . The first night of the festival celebrates the Mother Mary . During the day in the center of Kriva Palanka there is a traditional music and dance festival , which then leads up to the night hike through the Osogovo mountains near the Bulgarian boarder . The slava is full of food , music and trinket shopping ! Bring your flashlight though , because it is tradition to hike down from the monastery after midnight in order to also celebrate Sv . Joakim Osogovski on the 29th of August . Several people bring their sleeping bags and spend the night at the monastery ( many of them just on the floor somewhere ), but don ’ t worry , Justin and Michelle are both willing to host you on their floors instead .
