30-something PCVs are lucky because we have work experience, and I’ not talking about that job

at McDonalds or that one year internship after college but years in an actual career. This gives us
street cred with the locals, not to mention we learned things in said career which we apply in our
Peace Corps work. Plus, if it turns out that our Peace Corps experience is not all we hoped it would
be, we just chalk it up as a two year international sabbatical and move on.
PCVs in their 30s are unencumbered—we don’ have kids or grandkids and our parents are

(more-or-less) okay being left unsupervised for two years. Most of us never had any property, so
forget about mortgage woes…also forget about being able to get a mortgage after working for free
for two years and blowing all our savings, but that’ another ??????)?)!
