Getting to Know the Gender & Development Committee
by Alex Dunn, MAK17
The Peace Corps Macedonia Gender and Development Committee was founded in late 2012 by Peace Corps Volunteer Stephen Robinson to raise awareness about gender-related issues in Macedonia through educational programming and outreach. It is currently focusing heavily on gender dynamics between men and women and promoting gender equality. Its ongoing projects include a programming manual full of activities to help PCVs talk about gender issues in their classrooms, a training program for PCVs and Peace Corps Staff that will be introduced before September’ s Pre-Service Training for the incoming volunteers, and an online platform to allow information sharing between volunteers and outside organizations. The committee’ s long-term goals include a Girls Leading Our World / Young Men’ s Leadership Project-inspired camp experience designed to give youth the tools to talk about gender issues and become advocates in their communities, to educate and offer outreach on LGBTQ issues, and to promote LGBTQ rights in Macedonia.
OUR MISSION: We believe that human potential is not defined or limited by sex or gender, and we aspire to a society that reflects that belief by:
-Encouraging awareness and respect among the people of Macedonia.
-Providing a safe and non-judgmental forum in which gender issues can be discussed.-Producing and disseminating materials related to gender issues to facilitate examination and discussion in schools, workplaces and other institutions, and among Peace Corps volunteers and staff.
OUR VISION: To work in Macedonia toward the creation of a global society in which all persons enjoy equal rights, empowerment and opportunities( regardless of gender, sex or orientation).
