After the Coptic area, we
marveled at some of the biggest
mosques I have ever seen. Islam
came to Egypt around the 7th
century, and relations between
the Christians and Muslims
remained relatively peaceful.
The sultan at the time had
respect for them, as one of his
concubines was Coptic. The
language of Egypt changed to
Arabic at that point and has been
the spoken language ever since.
The trip to the Pyramids was
fascinating – but watch out for
tourist traps! Our taxi driver,
who basically works with the
hostel, took us to some of his
friends who bargained a twoday tour of the pyramids on
horseback, camel and with
entrance to one of the pyramids.
While some would consider this
a reasonable price, it would have
been just as well if we had just
paid the one-time entrance fee
to walk around the pyramids
on foot, for as much time as
we needed, and we would not
have felt like we’d taken on an
adventure we didn’t need.
We also got to see the laser and
light show from a rooftop for
free, but we were again given
a sales pitch on the papyrus
artwork you can buy on the

and with their costume. They
will use your camera and expect
a generous donation for their
service of taking your picture.
You will also find people giving
you a nice souvenir before you
enter the pyramid for free,
then offering you everything
they sell when you exit. They
don’t easily take no for an
