Iguanodon

By Jason Kabacinski

What do Iguanodons look like? In 1822, Dr. Gideon thought the teeth of an Iguanodon looked like an iguana tooth. In 1842, a scientist named Richard Owen found out the Iguanodon wasn’t just a giant lizard. They lived about 130 million years ago. Iguanodon was 20 feet [6 meters] long. Iguanodons stood up to 17 feet [5 meters] tall on two strong legs. The Iguanodon is related to the Ouranosaurus [oh-RAN-oh-SORE-us]. It weighed 2 to 3 tons [1.8 to 2.7 metric tons]. It had no front teeth. Its name means “iguana tooth”. So Dr. Gideon called the animal an “Iguanodon”. Its teeth were large and strong. Iguanodon had a bony beak like mouth to tear leaves off plants. That’s what Iguanodons look like.
