Shots With The Boss

Congratulations on your new job. You have the skills and background to do well in the position, and an education to back that up. But there is another factor that determines how well you succeed in your position – socialization. At some point, especially in a company with a lot of young employees, you will probably be in a social situation with co-workers involving alcohol. At another point, you will most likely be in a similar situation with your boss. The way you handle yourself and even what you order to drink, will have an impact on your success within the company. No one wants to promote someone who is an outlier within the social dynamics of the office Having drinks with co-workers is common with many companies. Five o’clock rolls around and, before everyone heads home just to prepare for the next day ahead, happy hour is upon us. Drinking with co-workers is a much more familiar territory. Though different than college drinking, (I hope no one is doing keg stands with their cubicle-mates!) it should be a casual situation with very little pressure on what to order or how to act. When a boss is involved, things get a little different. Weather you are drinking shots, beer, or mixed drinks, there are right ways and wrong ways to go about it, and shots are the most difficult path to take.
