It’s an asymmetric gait (the movement of the limbs on one side do not mirror the movement of limbs on the other). Various disciplines require varying degrees of canter. For instance, within dressage there are four types of canter – collected, working, medium and extended – all of which place different biomechanical demands on the horse.
