Why is motivation important in learning?
January is always one of the best times for reflection and I'd like you to think back to the last time you learnt something new. However big or small, it's likely there was some form of motivation. Here are some of the common possibilities:
- It was necessary for work- someone made you learn it.
- It was necessary for the students and their course.
- It was something you were genuinely interested in.
How much better would the experience be for our students if there was genuine interest and intrinsic rather than extrinsic motivation? Their success with learning is likely to be far higher if they've invested themseleves in it.
This month's magazine will explore several ways in which such motivation might be achieved. Generating curiosity, building rapport and ensuring the curriculum is relevant will each be explored in turn.
The study programmes and Go Further weeks are all about enriching the curriculum so that students' learning is as relevant as possible. We'd love some of you to share with others how you've achieved success with this so please get in touch with me if you're interested in delivering a session, recording a video or writing something about the work you and your students are
doing. Email me at:

We hope you had a restful holiday and we wish you all the best for the new year!
