SARAH TIPTON: Creative Bird Advocate in the Outfield

As a Spring Hill native and sophomore at PHSC, Sarah Tipton balances her academic commitment with her time in the outfield. Driven by a deep passion for both animal welfare and softball, Sarah chose PHSC for its reputation for high-quality, affordable education. As she works towards completing her Associate in Arts at the West Campus, Sarah remains focused on her studies and family, valuing the opportunity to stay close to home.

Beyond the four walls, Sarah spends her days and weekends patrolling the outfield as # 15 for the PHSC women’ s softball team. Her connection to the athletic program runs deep; she grew up watching her aunt play for the College and even trained with a former Bobcat pitching coach. After high school, Sarah took initiative by contacting the College’ s softball coaching staff at the time to secure a tryout. She was able to secure a spot on the team along with a full-ride scholarship. Now, Sarah considers her team to be her second family on campus.“ Knowing you always have somebody you can study with, or even just run to get lunch with, is really helpful when you are trying to juggle life and school at the same time,” she said.
Since starting her academic career in the fall 2024 semester, Sarah has kept her priorities straight as a busy student-athlete.“ Softball and school are pretty much my main priorities,” she explains. Despite her hectic schedule, Sarah still makes time to engage in campus life, whether it’ s grabbing a quick bite at a Taco Tuesday event or enjoying the tight-knit community with her peers.
While she’ s a powerhouse on the field, a piece of Sarah’ s heart also belongs to birds and the mission behind the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary.

“ I’ ve always been interested in animals and animal welfare in general, my whole life. It’ s always been my dream to be a veterinarian,” said Sarah. Located in Hudson, the Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary provides a permanent, peaceful home for over 900 intelligent birds who can no longer stay with their owners. Unlike other rescues, the Sanctuary does not breed, sell or adopt out. Instead, their birds are eventually relocated into one of their large outdoor aviaries where they have the opportunity to learn how to“ be a bird” rather than just a pet. Sarah aptly describes the Sanctuary as a“ parrot retirement home.” She began volunteering at the Sanctuary during her sophomore year in high school and has
