Since my teen years , I have had a deep appreciation for history , literature and philosophy . From kindergarten through graduate school , I enjoyed structured learning and study and had an appetite for reading , nurtured by my parents . We rarely watched television as children . Rather , we read for pleasure and enjoyed family-based social activities , music and the great outdoors .
Will you share an anecdote that evokes a special childhood memory ?
Although my parents were not farmers , many of my great childhood memories involve farming . I worked on several farms , and we had , at different times , chickens , turkeys , horses , cows , pigs , dogs , cats and rabbits . During the long , harsh Wisconsin winters , my brothers and I had to carry fivegallon buckets of water to our animals . At times , we had to

shovel a path from the house to the barn through more than two feet of snow . As young teenagers , my brothers and I took pride in our ability to carry two full buckets of water those 75 yards . We ice skated and played hockey on a frozen pond , accessible only by a 30-minute walk through snow-covered fields . We risked frostbite in the process , but ice skating on a pasture pond with the sun setting on glimmering snow is among myriad wonderful childhood memories .
When our well ran low during droughts , my father , brothers and I drove a pickup truck loaded with buckets to the local creek and hauled water back to our animals . It was hard work , but I would not trade those experiences for anything .

Seven people living on one modest salary and a little income from my mom teaching piano lessons meant that there wasn ’ t much margin financially . But my parents ’ careful money management , coupled with their strong work ethic , meant that we always felt secure and , in truth , had all we needed . My work ethic is borne of my parents ’ example ,
