From the President Fall 2023

Dear Friends :
At Perspective ’ s publication date , PHSC ’ s fall term and the start of the new academic year have just begun . Student enrollment is up by 12 % over this time last year , a new PHSC president will be selected soon , and our future looks brighter than ever . After several challenging years , PHSC is re-bounding — a testament to the dedication , resourcefulness and fortitude of our entire College community .
As PHSC President since 2015 and , previously , as the College ’ s Vice President of Student Development and Enrollment Management from 2007 , I have worked to leave PHSC in a better place than I found it — building on the success of previous PHSC Presidents Milton O . Jones , Ph . D ., founder ; Robert W . Judson Jr ., Ed . D ., and Katherine M . Johnson , Ed . D . Each president made incredible progress at PHSC with a distinct leadership style of their own .
Every president ’ s leadership style is derived from years of professional and personal experience . Less evident is the influence of forebears who , sight unseen , whether through family oral history or DNA , help shape who we are as individuals and leaders . When I agreed to a proposal to explore my personal history and ancestry in this publication , Professor Emerita Carmine Bell , Ph . D ., gathered information from mentors , family and friends about my development as a leader and uncovered family mysteries unknown even to me . I hope you find the feature , beginning on page 13 , interesting .
With mixed emotions , I am preparing to conclude my tenure at PHSC on January 31 , 2024 . There is much to accomplish in the final months as CEO , especially working toward a smooth transition of leadership .
Thank you to the District Board of Trustees , the College ’ s many donors and friends , College administrators , faculty , staff and students for the opportunity and privilege to serve as president of PHSC . I am proud to be part of the College ’ s history and look forward to PHSC ’ s continued success .
The opportunities PHSC provides to our district are more precious than gold and will continue to pave the way for students for generations to come .
Sincerely ,
Timothy L . Beard , Ph . D . PHSC President
