SCHOLARSH

SPOTLIGHT : DORIAN HOWELL

Hometown : Spring Hill , Florida Rose and Leonard Case Memorial Scholarship

What influenced your decision to attend PHSC ? Originally , I was thinking of attending a university or St . Pete College because my sister went there . My goal was to not take out any loans to get my degree . I went to PHSC to do the GED test . While I was there , I walked around the West Campus and talked with some staff about PHSC . I decided to attend PHSC because it was the closest college to me and to save money before attending a university .

What are you studying ? I am currently in the Bachelor of Applied Science in
Supervision and Management program . I am in my final semester . I enjoy learning about the stock market , business , marketing , finance , accounting and how to be a manager .
What is your fondest PHSC memory ? The spring 2022 commencement where my mom and I graduated with our AA degrees together . We sat next to
each other . After my mom got her diploma , they called
my name and my mom , still on stage , turned around , pointed to me , and yelled , “ That ’ s my baby !” It was a very fun and special moment for me .
Is there someone at PHSC that you admire and why ? I have three people that I admire . First , Timothy L . Beard , Ph . D ., who personally helped get my mom enrolled in PHSC . He inspires me because he is not only the president of PHSC but also a pastor at a church in St . Petersburg , which inspires me to pursue my goal of becoming a hedge fund manager and pastor . The second is former provost Kevin O ’ Farrell , Ph . D . I took his workshop on networking , which inspired me to look at networking as just making friends . He inspired me to become a leader , and I became the collegewide
Student Government Association president and Director of Social Media for FCSSGA during Covid-19 . The third is Lisa Richardson , Ed . D . During my internship , I got to witness how much work she does to help get more funding for students , and she always made an effort to stop by and check on me when she was in the office .
What did receiving this PHSC Foundation scholarship mean to you ? I was very grateful to have received the PHSC Foundation scholarship . It has allowed me to stay in college full-time and not have to get another job . Without the PHSC Foundation scholarship , I would have probably dropped out of college . I am very thankful for the support of the PHSC Foundation in helping me continue my education .
What does the future hold for you ? After graduating with my bachelor ’ s degree at PHSC , I plan to attend the University of West Florida and get my Master of Business Administration with a concentration in finance . My career is a hedge fund manager , and I plan on becoming a pastor after I retire . I also plan to work with non-profits to help my community , focusing on helping children and senior citizens . On a personal level , I am getting married to my fiancée Mercedes in 2025 and plan on having a lot of children .
Why do you think philanthropy matters ? Philanthropy matters because it helps the next generation of people be able to better themselves even if they do not have the resources . This also helps to strengthen our community . If not for the donors who provide scholarship funding , I would not be able to receive my bachelor ’ s degree as quickly . Philanthropy also teaches us to have a spirit of giving .
