From the President
Spring 2023
PASCO-HERNANDO STATE COLLEGE
President Timothy L . Beard , Ph . D .
Dear Friends :
Mid-way through our 50th Anniversary year , PHSC has hosted campus celebrations , unveiled commemorative murals , honored our founders , and presented inspiring , thought-provoking speakers . We continue to highlight the College ’ s colorful history and share our video “ Reflections on Gold : A PHSC Retrospective ” at every opportunity .
In chronicling the College ’ s history , we learned that each of our four presidents , myself included , rose from humble , if not impoverished , childhood circumstances . In a commencement address , District Board of Trustees Chair John Mitten said , “ Our College leaders demonstrate that success is not bestowed upon the fortunate or wealthy . Success is earned , despite the odds , or maybe , because of them .” Our College ’ s founders faced nearly insurmountable challenges and succeeded brilliantly . The stories of determination and resiliency shared in the video resonate with audiences , including our winter 2022 graduating class . Learn more about Reflections on Gold on page 19 .
The cover of the spring 2023 Anniversary edition of Perspective portrays images of 50 PHSC alumni , representing the College ’ s 50 years of service . The “ 50 Faces of PHSC ” tribute , beginning on page 14 , honors the alumni in a four-page , fold-out section of the magazine . The alumni featured serve in a variety of careers and positions , filling important roles in our community and beyond . With approximately 60,000 alumni to date , selecting just 50 representatives was daunting . We remain in awe of the accomplishments of our graduates and are proud that they share PHSC as an alma mater .
Before PHSC concludes our 50th Anniversary year in June 2023 , we will collect items for a time capsule that will preserve our history and capture our current place in time . The efforts of countless College leaders , donors , faculty , staff and students fueled PHSC ’ s rapid advancement during our first 50 years of service . “ People made the difference ,” said founding President Milton O . Jones , Ph . D . Indeed , when our time capsule is unsealed during PHSC ’ s 75th Anniversary , I believe our successors will be impressed by the contributions we are making today — and how we helped shape the College , circa 2047 .
Sincerely ,
Timothy L . Beard , Ph . D . PHSC President
