CONTEST HONORS CENTENNIAL WOMEN ’ S RIGHT TO VOTE The 19th Amendment to the U . S . Constitution , ratified in August of 1920 , gave women the right to vote . In 2020 , PHSC celebrated women ’ s suffrage with a Centennial Women ’ s Right to Vote Contest . Students were offered the opportunity to show off creativity and skill by submitting an essay , photograph , drawing / painting or digital media while recognizing this important event in American history .
The three contest winners , all dual enrollment students , were Alysa Hicks , Tyler Borges and Morgan McDaniel . Borges photograph : Three Generations of Women Affected by the Nineteenth Amendment showcases some history of the Lawson family , particularly Lawson women , who enlisted in various US armed forces in the 1940s .
Borges photo caption reads : Emily Lawson ( pictured ) is a result of 80 years of blood , sweat , and tears from her relatives ’ lives . Her greatgrandmother , grandmother , and mother were all members of the U . S . Air Force , and Emily plans to gain membership herself . To honor her family ’ s past , Lawson is pictured in one of her grandmother ’ s uniforms , her mother ’ s combat boots , and a Rosie the Riveter inspired pose and lipstick . She also proudly displays an “ I Voted ” sticker on her upper-arm , a true tribute to 100 years of women ’ s rights .
PHSC AWARDED $ 449,311 GRANT FOR RAPID CREDENTIALING PROGRAMS PHSC was awarded a $ 449,311 grant through the CARES Act Governor ’ s Emergency Education Relief ( GEER ) Rapid Credentialing Program . The College has joined forces with the Florida Department of Education ( FDOE ) on a new workforce education initiative to raise awareness of short-term career and technical education programs .
According to the Governor ’ s Office , these rapid credentialing programs aim to increase all of Florida ’ s state and technical college ’ s capacity to enroll and graduate students in short-term , indemand , high-wage technical certificates , career certificates , and industry certification preparatory courses . This workforce initiative will provide Floridians the opportunity to complete programs in 18 weeks or less , aiding in accelerated recovery for residents and the economy .
“ The rapid credentialing grant enables PHSC to provide streamlined career training pathways to high demand and high-wage careers in very short turn-around time for the residents of our twocounty service district ,” said Marcia Austin , Ed . D ., dean , workforce development , career , and technical education . “ PHSC is proud to collaborate with business partners like the Bay Area Apartment Association and Global Business Systems to provide Pasco and Hernando county residents with opportunities to achieve economic prosperity through expanded career education .”
PHSC introduced several rapid credentialing courses , in the areas of manufacturing , health , cybersecurity , drones , real estate , and more , to provide technical training that directly responds to current industry demands and offers an accelerated pathway to high-wage careers .
