FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, When the Spring 2020 semester began, nobody imagined the College would shift to online operations by mid-March and continue remote operations through the summer. With 1,100 face-to-face classes moved online in spring and most summer classes held online, PHSC administrators, faculty and staff worked diligently to maintain quality instruction and support services for students. This new normal was indeed difficult. Despite many challenges, PHSC and the PHSC Foundation implemented innovative ways to assist and encourage students. Student service areas transitioned to provided streamlined, quality assistance to students through email, phone calls and virtual platforms. The PHSC Foundation helped students in need through the Support our Students (SOS) Emergency Relief Fund. Faculty unaccustomed to online instructional platforms received training. Student Life and Leadership hosted online events to engage students and reassure them that together we would finish the semester strong. And, for the first time in PHSC history, commencement was held virtually. Despite the challenges of a global pandemic, PHSC persevered with initiatives to carry the College forward and to best serve the needs and interests of our students. The new Instructional Performing Arts Center (IPAC) is nearing completion and will open this fall. At the center, new educational pathways in fine, applied and digital arts will be available to students beginning January 21. PHSC’s phased approach to reopening campuses has provided time for safety and security measures to be in place, in compliance with CDC guidelines. Our safety and security team instituted practices that help ensure a safe return to on-campus operations. The safety and security of our students, employees and community members is paramount. PHSC remains steadfast in its commitment to providing higher education opportunities for our students, while maintaining a safe and secure environment. Helping students achieve their goals is the basis of our work. Please enjoy this issue of Perspective that highlights exciting Foundation and College events and activities—whether in-person or virtual—as well as interesting academic programs. You can also read more about our highly accomplished faculty, staff and most important of all, our students. Perspective also recognizes the ongoing generosity of our amazing donors. Thank you to everyone who supports PHSC, the PHSC Foundation and our mission. Thank you, and stay well! Timothy L. Beard, Ph.D. | PHSC President PASCO-HERNANDO STATE COLLEGE President Timothy L.
