LEAVING A
LEGACY
This spring, the PHSC Foundation was the beneficiary of two substantial estate gifts and a generous grant from philanthropists who wanted to provide opportunities for students to pursue a better life through education.
Ruth Kavli
Ruth Kavli, who passed away in 2008, was an animal lover and lifetime hard worker. The daughter of a World War II Navy veteran, Ruth never acquired an opportunity to attend college. Regardless, she made a decent career as an administrative assistant for the New York Bell phone company. Ruth loved animals, and her Scottie dogs, Barney, Tara, and Duffy, remained by her side until the end. Ruth made a decision following a cancer diagnosis, to leave a legacy by providing opportunities for other blue-collar students to achieve their educational and career aspirations. The establishment of the Ruth Kavli Memorial Scholarship fund at PHSC, with over $ 400,000 from her estate, will administer these capabilities. Starting in 2018-19, the scholarship will minimally provide $ 13,000 in scholarships for up to twenty PHSC students.
Mary Ann Hess
Mary Ann Hess grew up in the heartland of America. The Midwesterner loved to travel the world but philanthropically supported community charities that opened doors for people locally. Upon retiring from the Wisconsin Gas Company, Hess
Judith Barrett, Ruth Kavli Estate trustee; William J. Shustowski, PHSC Foundation Executive Director Emeritus; and Wayne Coulter, advisor to Kavli Trust.
relocated to Florida in our local Spring Hill community. Mary Ann cultivated many lasting friendships through her enjoyment of card games and events until she passed away last year at the age of 92. Distributions from her estate, totaling $ 400,000 to date, were donated to the PHSC Foundation in 2018.
Edward K. Roberts
The Community Foundation of Sarasota County recently granted $ 40,000 from the Edward K. Roberts Fund to the PHSC Foundation to provide scholarship assistance to part-time students who may not qualify for other financial aid during the summer and fall semesters. Roberts was a generous lifelong donor to PHSC and upon his death in 2009, established the Edward K. Roberts Fund with the Community Foundation of Sarasota County. Since 2011, the PHSC Foundation has received $ 340,000 from the Edward K. Roberts Community College Fund providing scholarships to more than 550 PHSC students.
