the 2018 Bellwether Award. This award recognizes
outstanding and innovative programs and practices that are
successfully leading community colleges into the future.
PHSC’s Marketing and Communications team
received recognition from the National Council for
Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) District 2
with a bronze award for the spring 2017 Perspective
magazine and a silver award for the Stopout–We
Miss You postcard. Marketing collaborated with the
Foundation on Perspective magazine.
Maya Pakhomova, Senior Instructional Design
Coordinator, was selected to present “A Journey
to Universal Accessibility Within eLearning
Environments” at the Online Learning Consortium
in Orlando.
PHSC President Emerita
Katherine M. Johnson, Ed.D.,
was honored with the Dr. James
L. Wattenbarger Award by the
Association of Florida Colleges
(AFC) Council of Presidents.
The AFC Council of Presidents
select a recipient annually who
has advocated for affordable,
convenient open access to
higher education and who has
made significant contributions
to Florida’s higher education
system. The award is named
for James L. Wattenbarger,
renowned as the architect of Florida’s internationally recognized
community college system.
Larry Johnson, Plans Reviewer/Building Inspector; Jennifer
Lewellen, Student Recruiter, STEM Programs; and Breanna
Perry, Coordinator Career Services, were among the 15 state of
Florida college employees to complete the Association of Florida
Colleges Certified Professional Program.
Connie LaMarca-Frankel, Professor, Humanities, was selected
by Phi Theta Kappa to serve as a 2018-19 Faculty Scholar at
the Faculty Scholar Conference and Honors Institute at Villanova
Jan Scott, Executive Director of MIS, was a co-presenter of
the Smarthinking program at the Moving the Needle Conference
at St. Petersburg College. Scott also gave a presentation on
the College’s automation and disaster recovery process at the
International Unite Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jennifer Veloff, Associate Dean of Academic Technology,
presented on Leadership in Distance Education and Niki Watson,
Senior Instructional Design Coordinator, was selected to speak on
“Data Collection in Academic Technology: Data-Driven Decision
Making to Promote Student Outcomes in Higher Education,” at
the Association for Educational Communications and Technology
(AECT) International Convention in Jacksonville.

Springs, Fla. Additionally, Bob
Bade, Ed.D., Vice President of

Management, and the Student Affairs team presented PHSC’s
Retention Behavior Inventory (RBI) Program at the Move the
Needle National Conference in St. Petersburg.
