STORY OF HOPE
Kimmarie Lopez
Kimmarie Lopez recognized an early calling for nursing. She
began her professional journey at Pasco-Hernando State
College enrolling in the Medical Assistant program and then
enlisting in the United States Air Force Reserve hoping to
become a flight nurse. Difficulties receiving a state nursing
license prompted Lopez to return to college. Happily putting
her education on hold, she married and raised two children.
Once her children were older,
she found a passion for
oncology nursing. Devastated
to learn her previous
experience was insufficient,
Kimmarie was encouraged
to further her education.
“Unfortunately, my husband
and I were not in a financial
position to support returning
to PHSC.” Accepting
assistance from her parents,
Kimmarie became one of the
first Pasco-Hernando State
College Bachelor of Science in
Nursing applicants.
Excited to restart her
academic career, Kimmarie
experienced straining

difficulties. Beginning the program, her mother passed away
unexpectedly. Weeks later, her teenage son was hospitalized.
The following semester her father became ill, leaving Lopez
as his caretaker. Cutting back work hours and mounting
hospital bills left Lopez doubting capability to complete the
nursing program.
A professor questioned Kimmarie about her struggles and
enlightened her about Foundation scholarships.
“I would not have graduated
without the enormous gift of
Foundation support. I was able to
finish because of the wonderful
donors who provided for my hopes,
dreams and aspirations. Thank
you for providing opportunity,
encouragement and the gift
of education.”
Kimmarie received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in
December 2018. Today she is an oncology nurse working for
Moffitt Cancer Center.
