The sport of bowls is a healthy activity which caters for young and old . It creates a fun environment for the social player as well as an atmosphere for the competitive sports person .
The sport in South Africa complies to international standards and Bowls South Africa is the governing body . Newcomers to the sport are encouraged and guided by qualified coaches and introduced to the club system . ( Source : BSA Website )
Bowls is a very underestimated sport . From a spectator side it might seem boring , but once you play it yourself , it is totally a different ball game ! It teaches you to focus , as one has to think on strategy and shot choice after every bowl delivered . And , you need to be fit ! Games consist of singles , pairs , trips and fours , which make it exciting .
In our own little town of Parys we have a bowling club catering for social players , competitive players , as well as a strong business league . The result of this combination makes it one of the strong clubs
in the North West province . Competitive members / teams always feature in the provincial and national competitions with good results . The club is managed by a committee , selected annually by the members at the AGM .
The club hosts two big , popular annual tournaments , with team entries from all over the country .
The current ladies champion is Magdel O ’ Donoghue , and the men ’ s champion is Dries de Jager . Paulo de Ponte is the novice champion .
The ladies team of Magdel O ’ Donoghue , Linda Fuhri , Amanda Bester and Lazuya Serfontein took gold in the North West Premier League . Jaco Nel , Poena Olivier , Magdel O ’ Donoghue and Amanda Bester are members of the current North West provincial squad . Jaco Nel and Poena Olivier also made it to the last 8 in the Gauteng Open mens pairs , Lazuya Serfontein and Yvonne made it to the last 16 in the ladies pairs , one of the biggest competitive tournaments in South Africa , an excellent result .
