- Discovering Art in Every Brushstroke
Growing up surrounded by the creative scents of beeswax and pottery clay , Annette Dannhauser ’ s artistic journey began long before she officially embarked on her career . Raised by a mother who was an artist , Annette ’ s early years were infused with creativity , fueling her passion for drawing and crafting . Her vivid imagination and penchant for dreaming big were nurtured in an environment where art was a daily presence .
After completing school , Annette ventured into the world of accounting and booking — a path she found unfulfilling . Despite the stability it offered , her true passion remained in the realm of art . She had always enjoyed making things , from arts and crafts to more elaborate projects . This intrinsic love for creativity eventually led her to make a significant life change .
At 35 , Annette made a bold decision to pursue her artistic dreams . Balancing a part-time job while studying at WITS Technikon for five years , Annette also managed the demanding task of raising four young daughters . Juggling motherhood with her studies was a challenge , but her determination and passion for art drove her forward . She achieved her diploma in Fine Arts in 1997 and a BTech degree in 1999 . Her dedication paid off when she received the SASOL New Signature People ’ s Choice Award in 2001 .
Annette ’ s professional path took a turn when she briefly worked as a teacher , an experience she found unsatisfactory . In 2002 , she relocated to Parys , South Africa , where she now lives on a small farm just outside town with her husband , their dog Charlie , and two cats . This serene setting provides the perfect backdrop for her full-time painting career .
Over the years , Annette has been a prominent figure in numerous art festivals . However , like many artists , her activities were interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic . Despite these challenges , her work continued to evolve . She is widely known for her evocative series of sheep and farm scenes , which capture the essence of rural life with a unique perspective . Her work always tells a story .
In 2022-2023 , Annette spent three months in Paris , France for an art residency . This opportunity allowed her to conduct research and explore new artistic directions . Her recent project , “ Shape of a Woman ” represents a deep dive into how trauma influences physical and emotional experiences . This series marks her debut into digital art , showcasing a new dimension of her creativity .
Locally , Annette ’ s artworks are available at Art And Soul and Tanya ’ s Framing in Bree Street , Parys .
