SANBS calls upon all South Africans to join this life-saving movement
For over 22 years , the South African National Blood Service ( SANBS ) has been driven by its mission , to save lives and ensure that every citizen has access to blood transfusions when they are in need . This cannot be done without the invaluable contribution of dedicated donors . SANBS calls on all South Africans to join this life-saving movement and take on the cause of becoming everyday heroes by donating blood . Your selfless act will enable us to keep giving the gift of life to those who need it the most .
A unit of blood can save up to three lives To meet the daily demand for blood , SANBS must collect an average of 3 500 units of blood a day . SANBS would like to encourage all regular and potential blood donors , especially the youth to donate blood . SANBS also calls upon first-time donors and lapsed donors who know that their blood type is Group O , to donate blood . Group O Rh negative blood can be transfused to anyone , so these donors are referred to as “ universal donors ”. Group O Rh negative patients on the other hand , can only receive group O Rh negative blood . Group O blood is the most versatile and adequate stocks of group O blood are vital .
