University students
taking to playing golf
As part of the Get into Golf programme
the BB&O Golf Partnership have been
working with Buckinghamshire New
University and Wycombe Heights Golf
Centre to put together a programme which
gave the students and staff a chance to
learn golf.
The idea behind running the weekly taster
sessions was to feed the structured
beginner programmes that had been set up
at Wycombe Heights.
Using the street golf initiative which
involves using areas and obstacles on site,
we were able to deliver a taste of golf to
around 130 students and staff over a
number of weeks.
The first five-week programme was run in
October and 22 people took part. The
second took place the following month and
20 new people went through the
programme.
Some of the activities that we ran included
a golfing crossbar challenge which we
adapted from the footballing version. One
week the students and staff were chipping
soft balls into the back of a car. We also took
the net along.
Wycombe Heights are looking to put in
place some kind of student membership
where the university students can continue
their golf by using the range, the par-3
course and some of the club’s other
facilities.
The five-week beginner programmes were
run by Scott Sellars, the PGA professional.
